“Der Bergdoktor” (The Mountain Doctor) is a famous German-Austrian TV series, which is produced in the Wilder Kaiser region. The tour starts in the centre of Ellmau. Head towards the church and continue straight on towards the Hartkaiserbahn gondola lift. Follow the road to the district of Faistenbichl. The second house on the right on the very top of the plateau is the famous Bergdoktor practice. Here the old and current mountain doctor runs his surgery, i.e. Siegfried Rauch and Hans Sigl. The nurse Miss Bornholm, alias Nicole Beutler, is also here when there’s filming. Don’t let the sign on the front door irritate you. Since the sign saying “Dr. Martin Gruber” was always mysteriously disappearing, the old sign of a former Ellmau doctor was put back up. You now descend the Faistenbichl back to the centre of Ellmau on the Marchstrasse following the signs towards the centre of Going.
On the church square you’ll find our little info hut with lots of facts and information about “Der Bergdoktor”. One thing you’ll find here is the “Gasthof Wilder Kaiser” from the TV series. This was once a quiet farmhouse where the owner Johann Gschwendtner lived alone. But it became an inn when filming of the TV series began in 2007. Here you can usually see Susanne Dreiseitl, alias Natalie O'Hara, waiting at the door of her beautiful inn for fresh deliveries from the “Gruberhof”. The beautiful village fountain in Going is also a very attractive feature of the series. The Holy Cross Parish Church in Going and its cemetery are visible from far and wide. Swarming over a cemetery is perhaps inappropriate. Nevertheless, a visit to the cemetery will confirm that this would make a perfect last resting place. In the film you have a bird’s eye view of the church and village square again and again.
You now continue following the signs to Stanglwirt. You cycle up to Going fire station where the cycle trail follows the stream to the Stanglwirt. An underpass takes you to the opposite side of the road. The Stanglwirt is quite an icon for many. The 5-star hotel is internationally well-known and is also the organiser of the famous/infamous “Veal Sausage Party”. It’s frequented by lots of celebrities who come to relax at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser.
Follow the trail to the Prama district heading towards Going bathing lake. Do not turn off at the lake, rather take the next fork. You now follow the cycle trail towards St. Johann. At the Römerhof inn you’ll find a battery charging station and also a more than adequate range of refreshments. After the Römerhof keep to the right following the signs to Rettenbach/Weitau. At Weitau you’ll find the Agricultural College which, in “Der Bergdoktor” plays the part of Lilli's school. Lilli Gruber, alias Ronja Forcher, is the youngest member of the family and, in the TV series, goes to school here. The e-bike circular trail now takes you across the bridge to Sperten into the small village of Oberndorf. From there you return via the Rerobichl hill to Going/Ellmau.
